When people first come to Smith Lake – they are often surprised by just how large the lake is. It has over 500+ miles of shoreline 21,000 acres of water that spreads across 3 counties – Walker, Winston & Cullman. 
 
Smith Lake was formed with the Sipsey River dammed in 1961. It is one of the largest earthen dams in the eastern United States. It stretches 2,200 feet in length and reaches a maximum height of 300 feet.
 
Alabama Power operates the dam, and the lake-level rules are determined by the Army Corps of Engineers.
 
In the fall, the water level generally drops to 496 feet above sea level. And in the spring the lake will usually rise to full pool – which is 510 feet.
